I am at the point of checking end play on the Crank.

When I first put the case together there was plenty of end play. Now there is not very much.

Is this normal as pistons and cylinders are added things tighten up?

when I push the flywheel in I set the dial indicator to 0 and then grab the fly wheel and pull it back.

I get a .006" while pulling but when I let go it settles at.005".

What is the correct measuring point under pressure or relaxed?

Should the flywheel just be pulled by hand or pried lightly with screw driver?

Hit with a RUBBER mallet on the other end.

Read it at the max movement, use three shims, no more, no less to make it work.

relaxed. .004 is the middle of the spec. do you have access to an assortment of shims?

The crank shaft under load will move the maximum amoun that it can move.

You need to know how much it will move prior to putting shims in place.
003 is the goal.

You setup the dial indicator tap the flywheel towards the center of the engine with a rubber mallet, then zero out the gauge.

Hit the crank from the other side, fan end, to see how far it moves.
Use three shims to get the overall movement to 003

If you use more or less than three, they will get damaged.

I don't have a great assortment of shims. just what was in the engines I have which all seem to bee .011 - .014 and I seem to need thinner shims as I am close to .006 with one shim.

I will try the mallet method and Hopefully my FLAPS can get shims pretty quickly.

I would like to run the car on Sunday.

Shims are to be found at specialty parts shops for our cars, a flaps store won't have them.

The measurement is pretty important and makes the difference between a long life motor and a one day motor.

Take the time to do it right.

anyone know what size shims come in?

I measured last night with no shims and I get .023" end play.
So .023 - .004=.019"/3 =.0063"

Do they make shims that thin?

Is it a concern that there is so little movement without any shims?
