Full Version: How Long Have You Been A 914 Owner

Someone mention that "Who Keeps A 914 More Than 5 Years" got me thinking about creating this unscientific poll

The Number of Years can represent one 914 or several different 914's over the years.
Tom_T
That poll shows more OO's than I would've expected, although I'm as close to an OO as you can get, having bought mine at 3 years old when the OO's family outgrew the 914.

I'm the second owner of my 73 914-2.0, having picked it up as my 3rd car in Dec. `75, and I still own 3 of my 5 owned ever since starting to drive in 1967.5 -

#1 - `68 Opel Kadette Notchback 2dr Coupe I4 1.1L 4spd
#2 - `69 Pontiac Ventura 4dr Sedan V8 400cid/2bbl Auto
(it was Dad's & I got when the Opel's engine blew in `71 during college)
#3 - `73 914-2.0 smile.gif ... a "914S" shades.gif stirthepot.gif happy11.gif
#4 - `85 BMW 325e 2dr Coupe I6 2.7L EFI 5spd (just finishing rolling resto)
#5 - `88 VW Westy H4 2.1L EFI Auto (just finishing rolling resto)

That's not counting my parents cars, nor the "unofficial #6" `88 Honda Civic Hatchback which was my wife's brothers' (2) since new & passed on to her when the last died, & we did a rolling resto for our kids to drive, now my son's car.

Also technically I do have 2x 914s - with a 74 2L body shell for body/rust repair panels in the garage too, but I bought it with no suspension/wheels - so in my mind it's a big box of 914 parts! biggrin.gif

However, we may add a true #6 at some point, as a "tow-capable" vehicle for my wife's recent addition of a restored vintage 1960 Avion T20 travel trailer ( a "fat silver twinkie" similar to Airstream). ... but then, they're never really done, so I've got myriad little projects to do on it too! dry.gif

So I tend to keep, maintain & restore my cars, but still use them to drive, although our total aggregate annual mileage is down now that kids are grown & gone, & I tend to use rental on long trips. I'm not much of a "serial offender."

Cheers! beerchug.gif

PS - the unofficial definition of those who asked your initial who keeps a 914 over 5 years is: "flipper" or "ADD Car owner" or maybe "just plain bad luck" .... as one of our group here is experiencing now with what to be his next resto project. biggrin.gif

Great topic.

The question is a bit skewed though, I can't answer correctly. I've had 914s on/off since 1998, but never kept one for more than 2.5 years.

My comment was more about the constant upgrading/changing/partscars that some go through. I looked at a 74' a few weeks ago where the guy had 3 entire cars worth of parts that he'd pulled and recycled the bodies.

1998-1999 : 1976 2.0 : Sold when I had to pay for my wife's Medical School
2005-2007 : 1973 2.0 : Sold when I bought the company I was working for at the time.
2005-2005 : 1974 1.8 : Parts car that we had a sawzall party for.

Owner since 74..

Ok i need to elaborate, had my original 73 2.0 car that i bought in 74 till i cut it up the shell in 2003, i used all of the parts from that car to
make a six conversion track car back into a street car, which i restored into the turbo monster. I have had 3 other 914s along the way that i played with or parted out.

Purchased mine February 1973. Car payments was around $125 a month. Traded in my 68 VW Fastback.

Bought my first one new in 1974, sold it in 1977 to pay for the 914-6 that I bought from the OO and still own.

Have had my conversion car for over 15 years as well, so I guess I'm not a 'flipper'.

Maltese Falcon
Owned the black '74 since new, picked it up from Downtown L.A. Porsche Audi. It had the 26 miles or so on the odometer. The bit of mileage was one of their marketing tools...as in "We test drove it in Germany".
About 50,000 actual chassis miles now. Many engine / transmission change-ups, probably 7 different air cooled in all.

I am the 3rd owner of my 73 2.0. I picked it up in October of 97; driving.gif I used it as a daily driver for ten years. It has spent two years in storage, and about two months on jack-stands. I have two rollers at this time also.

I bought my 73 2 liter from the original owner in 1985. Drove it in the summers for 25 years and have been restoring it for 3 years.
