I am getting ready to put on my 5 lug conversion piratenanner.gif and bought a set of original 14" 914/6 fuchs that will be going on the car,.
Wih these rims i was wondering what size and width tires were fitting on the narrow body cars? i currently have 8 spoke empi 15" with 195/55's, rear lip is rolled. i do not know the offset of the EMPI vs the fuchs, but seems like i remember hearing that there is alittle more room with the Fuchs?

so what i am considering is the Falken 195/60 14's or 195/65, or 205/55's if they would fit / I know that on the EMPI 15's the 205 would rub.

any input would be appreciated!!!

I run 195/60 14. . . If you have a stock 914-4 gearbox with the stock ZD as a 5th gear, the 14 inch rims along with the 195/60 tires make a nicer overall ratio. . Plus it lowers the car while keeping the suspension in the right places. .

I think Phil is running a different 5th gear. I seem to remember him changing that during a Dr. Evil rebuild clinic

yes, i re-geared my trans., 4th and 5th just a little different, the 4th is more like a 4.4, and 5th just a little as well. , i think it was the HA gear flipped and x? doc might remember what we did there, whatever it was, its a fairly common gear combo to use, but i was running pretty low profile tires too. It did drop my RPM's like 700 at highway speeds

But i agree, the 195/60 should be good for me. If i had the stock gearing i would probably go to the 195/65-14. Also my speedometer should be right on with the 195/60.

you gonna run higher revs and burn more gas but lower is nice except for speed bumps.

I have 205 60 14s with good clearance all around.

probably not too much so with the gearing change , but otherwise you are right, the tires that are coming off were 195/50, 15's, and were very firm on the bumps, but WOW with the bilistein sport shocks and swaybars, VERY tight in the corners, maybe just a little too stiff for a car that is 99% road at this time)

Jonathan, they look nice, the do stand a bit taller than my current set up, but that's o.k. , in the process of refinishing my rims, going to go with the polished pedals , but painted insets, like stock original.

195-65 14" would be the closest to the original tire size (185-78 14). I ran 195-70s back when with good luck, but there was still more room if needed.

As there's not too much sticky rubber around in those sizes, a lot of folks seem to be looking for a period correct look rather than the lowest profile.

I agree with above...I found some 195-70-14 Goodyear Viva's at Wal-mart for cheap. Almost identical height, a little wider, good tiire, good mileage, daily driver and cross country trips, and looks like it belongs in the70's.

thanks for the input, all. George, i was wondering what the original size was - so 185/80 is stock, 195/70 is close to the same, 195/65 would be close,. since i have re-geared my trans and adjusted my speedo for that, i would be good with the 195/60's or the 205's like Jonathan. idea.gif
Gustl, those look nice, and period correct, my speedo would be off with that size, as i get figuring it out, probably will go with what ever i get the best deal on, right now looks like 195/60's for $50/each is the best deal i have found so far.

I think the fatty's look right on a 914.

I have 195/70 on my 14in Fuchs wish I had bought the 205's for a little more grip. There is no wrong answer here .

It seems funny as all the newer performance cars have these ultra low aspect tires on them, but the taller sidewalls are correct for the car.

I really appreciate this as all the potholes around Chicago like to eat rims, and the rubber helps protect them. My son's Jetta GLI has eaten it's fair share of expensive alloy wheels as he seems to aim for potholes!
