My 914/4 is currently used exclusively for racing, so therefore I have no need to keep things stock. I'm curious if it's possible to replace the combo fuel gauge with an after market, smaller gauge so I can fit my oil pressure, temp, and volt gauges in place of the speedo.

Ask McMark he makes custom gauges.

I think 9Xauto,com makes the dash replacement you want. Standard VDO gas gauge will work. You need the one with 90 ohm resistance.

With the stock sender?

I have an Autometer programmable fuel gauge. It works with any sender.
The lens has a crack but it's for sale if you want it. $25 shipped.

nhspeedometer.com has the 2-1/6" VDO that matches our sender (0-70 ohm (70 being empty)).

FuelSafe/Centroid specified a 6 - 76 ohm sender to match the stock gauge. Works perfectly.

I have a VDO in the radio blank angled towards me. I'm pulling it, so I'll sell it cheap. Sending you a PM.

I found some VDO gauges on Jegs. I haven't had a chance to look into it yet but I'm not sure if these gauges will work with the 914.

It is very easy to remove the fuel gauge from the cluster and install it in something else if you want to go that route.

Interesting. I would LOVE to see an example of this if anyone has one!

Take out a combo gauge, and unscrew two screws.
The whole fuel gauge comes out as one piece (you have to tip it just right to clear).
I could send you a disassembled combo gauge, because I considered the same thing.

kg6dxn, would you have been able to fit all three gauges on the right of the stock tach?

I made a small bracket and mounted it under the dash!

That's pretty slick!
My only fear would be hitting it and breaking it during ingress/egress.

I have a full roll cage, and kept the targa attached, so it's pretty tight getting in and out. I can see certain situations, where the gauge if exposed could get hit by a flailing leg or something :-)
