My 73 1.7 idles at 700. It was idling at 500 last week but I turn the idle up. I spend a lot time replacing vacuum hoses and gaskets to get idle from 1800 to 700. There are many places that a vacuum leak can occur. It was an ongoing process over a few months to sort out all the possible leak sources. Some of the vacuum leaks were solved by using a hose clamp on some vacuum hoses. The first thing is to get a vacuum hose kit from Auto Atlanta and start there. Part number AAVACKIT1.

950.

I found that when idling my 1.7 at low rpm, say 500-700, after a few minutes the cylinder 1-2 gets much hotter than the 3-4 bank. Not that I know if that matters but since then I let it idle at 950rpm.
