I have seen these pit changes and always think about it when I am balancing my wheel on both feet while trying to thread on bolt.

So, how do they nail it, perfectly line up each time with no adjustment.
They seem to toss the tire on and start firing in bolts or nuts with no question they are perfectly lined up .....

The key is the studs have a smaller smooth end and the lug nuts are glued to the rim.

Remember when they used to use one of these?

Tough times for the pit crew. http://www.nascar.com/en_us/news-media/art...s-air-guns.html

Real reason is these guys are Professional Athletes now who only practice tire changes and fuel loading. They are now being recruited just for this task, they practice everyday. And that repetitive action makes them that fast. And it is just as competitive of a sport now as the race.

It is no longer the engine builder that does a second job on the pits.

Every now and again you see they do miss the wheel and have issues. The idea is to make this as rare as possible. Races are won on the track, they are lost in the pits.

funny how some times I get it first try, no problem.....
....then other times it's painful. have to walk away cause I want to throw the wheel thru the garage door... smash.gif

you never hear of anyone getting hit with a flying lug nut thats been shot out from under a tire confused24.gif ...most of the pit crew guys are ex college football players that are strong and fast..the days of Fatback McSwain and Chocolate Mayers are over lol-2.gif
