As per this article all VW engines (which are type IV engines are) were built with hardened valve seats from 1966 forward. Can anyone confirm this is true because I have been running lead substitute in my 914 to ensure there is some cushion for the valves.

Aluminum heads with steel seats. No need for lead additives. FWIW, most Porsches and VWs had steel valve seats, except for some earlyish 356s with bronze intake seats.
