Looks like a great start.

Thanks.
I've made some progress though I have yet to post the pix.
I went to order another quantity of paint but could not find
the receipt with the mix code.Yesterday went there with
a label from the can,and the guy wasn't there.

Hello All.
A discovery in what not do do to your 914.
If you look closely at the last pix you will see the strip
of sticking plaster tape across the rear window.
In a misguided attempt at securing a tarp,a po
has that stuff, now aged, all over the bottom of the rollbar.
Time To Remove:4hrs.A pita totally unneeded as was
the removal of the "undercoating spray".
A few minutes handy work with a can made for a
marathon effort in a spacesuit.
Method.
1:spray "Gunk Brake Cleaner" on 6"x6" area of trunk.
2:before the rapid evaporation, wipe with papertowel.
3:Repeat 1>3.
TTR:22hrs.
The results made it all worth it somehow and I am
pleased to discover it was an attempt at preservation
rather than disguise.I heated then pulled the factory
sealer from the bottom corner to find real steel.

Should be easy to pop the heads off those things and clean/inspect/rebuild them. (As your budget and inclination to tinker dictate.) They're pushrod motors, like the Type IV and the Bug motors, so the valve train is not that complex like in the 911 engines.

Long ago I wrenched a 4spd toploader into my 66 Mustang Coupe,
Gold w Perfect black int.289 2bbl.Circa '73.Even then the car was
a rustout.Floors,rockers,quarters,windowsills ...worse than my '62
Bug.I still have an affinity to the cars, but, for my next act a
914-C6 is IT.
Having some 40yrs of machinery building experience,I will now
endeavour something never tried with the Corvair. It may actually
be as simple as adapting recyclers production parts.Definitely
they will be my prime source. However,a first example must
be produced before any further Talk.

A little off topic, but I thought one of you who have made the
944/LS conversions jump might like this look.
A bit of work smoothing /fitting here or there could change the "face"
of the downtrodden 924/924T/944/951.The world's tastes have changed
in the 20+ years since they were marketed.

This am began the removal of heads sequence.

Dose all exposed studnuts with RustBuster.
Allow soak time,24-48 hrs.
Carefully grip case end of stud with modified vise-grip.
Apply torque gradually to squeak.
Apply more RustBuster.

Apply more RustBuster.
Fully release torque on all head studs.
Success!
Only one stud moved in the cases,5 degrees.

Apply RustBuster to cylinder/heads joint to soak into

Ixnay on easy,on the '64 both head's studnuts are fully released without damage.
The crank cranks freely until interference with dislodged carbon deposits.
All pistons undamaged, bores are free of rust.

Some PO installed these race plugs.
Heavy carbon deposits resulted.

Thanks 71-SIX
It was a 5-min inspection of the usual rust sites that made the decision easy.
The amount of work however,is 150% greater than what I first surmised.
It'll be fun to work on a chassis without the dreaded battery shelf corrosion.
A rare find here in the salted GTA.I will be putting in the time and sweat equity to polish a gem.More to come...

In the interest in full disclosure: my only experience with 914 is passing them on the track @ 24 hours of Lemons.

So, megasquirt is a popular commercial product. It works smile.gif Millions love and hate megasquirt.

FreeEms is an open source project with some history, they have a couple of dozens cars running it.

rusefi is a very young open source project with exactly one car running it, so you can either board this train or wait for another year or so till it would be beta-testable. Oh, and I am the founder of rusefi.

Why not use SDS FI? Easiest I've seen by far. There are two guys running turbo Corvairs with SDS around where I live. It costs more but what's your time worth?
I will be installing it on my built 3.0 soon...

An OpenSource EFI system is just the right price for this 914 Odyssey. Some tinkering and assembly is necessary, like the plastic AMT models of the early 60's.It'll be fun,It'll be fun,It'll be fun, fiddlin wit the pcb, easy as Pi,Raspberry.

I have read of some incredible pursuits of gremlins in the EFI threads,of which I want no part.Board level, discrete component errors that may burn a piston seem to be a frustrating time consumer.I do understand that a plugin solution is available at a price, however, this is an experimental trip down "914 Repair" lane.I'm happy that a software guy has made a contribution to the world of fuel injection. The approach is a valid one, with some distinct advantages.

I am not sure this is available. Site history stops in 2010.

Why not just run a MS? by the time you get a board made and assembled you will have more than that cost into it. Besides, you can solder up a kit yourself and then it will fit into your project guidelines.

Carry on with your paint work.
