im looking at a 70 914,newer rebuilt engine,newer trans with side shift,many new items ,carbs,shifter,repainted different color from original, and so on.car is beautiful,but am i going to regret at some time if it is not stock?.are carbs a disadvantage or more practical in the long run.i plan to keep for a long time and enjoy,not necessarily looking to turn in the near future.

If you plan to enjoy it, drive it, show it, etc... it doesn't matter all that much. Original will always fetch a higher price if its in collectable condition. Many will upgrade to the side shifter anyways. Regarding carbs... there are pros and cons. If you know how to tune them, they work great and really free up the engine bay, but if you have good FI parts, you just drive it..

The non-original color is probably the biggest draw back. If it was completely stripped and painted right, and if you like it, go for it!
