Greetings;

Been lurking on the site for awhile and enjoy the shared information. Recently acquired my father-in-laws 1974 914 1.8 It has been parked in his garage for about the last twenty years. He purchased it used in 1976 and I think he was the second owner. He has taken good care of the car and had a dealer applied under-sealer back when he bought it. The product seems to be the old school sealer, very waxy...but at least I can only find small amounts of rust. The battery tray is gone from the acid and it dripped down below, but I think not much damage.

The engine was rebuilt (stock) back in the late 80's. It still has the factory injection. I remember driving it when my wife and I were dating [almost 30 years ago now] and it ran great. Around that same time I worked as a mechanic in a VW repair shop and we always hated it when a 914 came in and look now, I own one. Life takes strange twists and turns.

I have not yet started it since the fuel tank had rust [since been repaired] and the brakes were stuck. I am rebuilding the calipers now.

I found one black wire near the ECU disconnected. Do I remember that was for grounding the Bosch tester?? Or am I just wacked??

If anyone can let me know, I would appreciate it.

Dennis

Welcome to the 914World, great looking car.

A single green/black wire coming from the main harness by the ECU is the temp gauge sender wire. Should not be any other single black wire anywhere aroudn there.

Nope, Father-in-Law was in the "high tech" vacuum business in San Jose CA. Vacuum used for make computer gear back in the day.

Thanks very much. The wire appears to be coming from the ECU, and I thought it was just black, but it is hard to see. It has the clear plastic connector shield still on it. This 914 does not have a temp gauge or console package. I would like to eventually add that after I get it running.

There is no factory single wire coming out of the ECU, just the selaed harness cable. If you have a wire its been added.

All 1974 914s will have the oil temp gauge wire in the main harness, it runs from just below the battery, to the center console (look under the carpet).

What part of NorCal are you in? We have occasional get togethers as posted here on this baord...please feel free to come on out and play sometime.

I will take another look and maybe post a pic or two. Don't need to worry about it now anyway...

I live about half way between San Francisco and Sacramento on the I-80..

There's quite a few of us in the EB. There's a guy in San Ramon who knows 1.8s pretty well.
