Posted on "What did you do to your 914 today" but not everyone checks that thread anymore:

Finished my door panels.
hand layup carbon fiber.

Here are the bare sheets that we made with vacuum bag & a piece of glass.
The template is laying on top. We rough cut the sheets with a tile saw to that shape, then trimmed them down with a belt sander.

The top lip has no hole for a window.
The top lips were vacuum bagged over a wooden positive mold

There is no hardware inside the door except the latch.
It is so cool to slam the door and have it sound like a drum.

What did you use in place of the pad at the top?

I like that. I'm going to have to come up with something similar. Where did you get the carbon sheet from?

Nice!

Want to make some spares? I'll take a set! How much did you spend in materials?

I had that in mind for my car but you are a few (hundred) steps ahead of me in the build!

That is the top lip where I laid CF over a wooden mold (same on both sides of car) and then vacuum bagged it. When it dries, it just pops off. Then I glued a wooden plug inside to drop into the window slot.
4 coats of clear coat, and thats what you get. No sanding.
That's also how I made the dash cover you can see in the background.

I made the sheet. You buy the raw cloth, lay it on a sheet of glass, cover it with resin, then vacuum bag it down to the glass.

It's hard to say since we had a lot of the materials from other projects.
If you had to buy it for a set of those, probably less than $150

Those look great Stu!

Congrats!! That looks great. I'm planning a similar set for my shop-car project.

Please explain what you mean by a sheet of glass...

An actual sheet of glass. I think in this case it was an old mirror.
You coat the glass with mold release, lay down the cloth, pour the mixed epoxy over it, squeegee it through, cover with a special plastic (like saran wrap) and apply a vacuum with a pump.
Once the resin cures it just pops off of the glass.
There a little more to it than that, but that the basics.
There are youtube videos showing how to do it

Nice! I did something similar but with el-cheapo ABS and aluminum from the hardware store. wink.gif

Interested in pics/info of your dash top. I'm trying to figure out what to do right now as my stock dash pad is in horrible shape.

I wonder if corrugated poster board would work as a backer, and leave it in place?

We also made sandwich panels using that foam core posterboard.
That works really well and is much more rigid that the single sheet.

I would love to have a set if you decide to make more!!

Here's some more.
I am learning some carbon fiber skills and picking a few parts on the race car to make.
