My windshield wipers don't like to return to home position (stock on the left side). In addition the "low speed" doesn't work either. Two clicks up (high speed) works but I get to do the old "time the shut off" if I want them to stop at the "home" position. Otherwise, it's just wiper roulette.

Is this a bad relay (the one in the front under the cowl) causing the condition?

Mine work in low or high, but I also have the problem that they stop in place as soon as I shut them off. I don't mind it; lets me park them on the passenger side where they're out of the driver's line of sight.

Worth swapping the relay around to one of the other sockets in the car. It's cheap and easy, after all.

But I think it's more likely that the microswitch in the linkage assembly (actually, is it in the motor housing?) isn't working correctly.

I was guessing it is the square relay mounted under the cowl behind the carbon cannister on my 74 2.0L.

I'm going to be taking out my gas tank soon for refurbishing so I guess if the wiper motor has to be replaced now is the time. But was hoping this was something simpler....or something in the mechanism in the steering column?

You have a delay wiper relay. (Option) the wipers do not need the relay to work. The switch controls the motor. The delay relay under the hood was an option with a small adapter harness.

Does your air blower motor work? It's on the same power circuit with the "return home" function.
If it works, remove the wire connector on your wiper switch and check that you have 12v on the green-white wire when the wipers are not parked. If you have then it's the switch.
If no power than it's either
1. the green-white wire or
2. the microswitch on the wiper motor or
3. the red-white wire that brakes away from the red-black one supplying power to the blower.
