So inside the longs is the infamous "heater air muffler". I've never seen a part# for these things, but was wondering what do people do with them? What replacement options are there (motor cycle muffler, just go with straight pipe, heater duct from local hardware store)?

I can only imagine that after 40 years they don't smell so well.

And if you have a solid car with solid longs, do you cut the longs anyway and "replace/fix" these? Noting of course that NO 914's have zero rust in the longs.

They don't go bad. There is no replacement.

The only time you have to worry about them is when you acid dip a chassis as the acid will eat up the mufflers.
In that case, you open up the longs and remove them before dipping the car.

A good way to clean them out is to remove the heater hose on both ends and use a strong shop vac to suck out any debris, like dead mice and the like.

Or when your DAPO drills through the longs to put in a giant metal bracket to mount the seats to since the floorboards were rotten. headbang.gif

Rdauenhauer has some of those tubes if people need them... but given his current situation he's gonna be out of the loop for awhile it sounds. sad.gif
