I bought a 914/6 which has a numbers matching engine but it has been modified with 2.2 cylinders with S cams and pistons and Weber 40IDAs. The engine was built by Rothsport Racing in OR in the early 2000s strictly for racing. I dropped the engine and trans to do some mods to the transmission at Dr. Evil's clinic a few weeks ago and while they were out I decided to do a refresh to the engine. In taking the carbs apart I found the float bowl bottoms to have some silicon or other pliable material spread around the corners of the bowl. See picture.

Any ideas as to why this was done and what advantage it provides? It also has 125 main jets but 170 air correction vice 130s and 180s which would have been stock for an S. Why?

This is to prevent fuel starvation to the engine on high g-force corners

If you look closely there is a plate that is glued near the bottom of each float bowel. This helps to force fuel to the main jets under hard cornering.

I thought you were supposed to use something that wasn't pliable, like JB Weld?

Since this will turn up in a search here's a couple of threads I've found on the subject.
