Anyone have any good pics or info on how the 914 GT headlight mechanism (with the cable release) worked? I'd like to come up with something similar for my car if it's not too difficult. I have an idea of how I could fabricate the lift mechanism - I just wonder how they fastened back down when closed.
Thanks in advance for any help!

I sell the rare GT windshield wiper kit......consists of a four carbon fiber rollers, twenty feet of stainless unobtanium twine and instructions....problem is....ya gotta steer with yer knees while pulling both ends of the S/S twine to actuate the wipers while 140 mph into a double off camber turn.
Only used once....wipe the blood off and burn marks.....$29.95....plus shipping and $150 for lawyer sign off....
Waste of time.....but it does get rid of 2.5 pounds of pesky weight above the midline....
Geeeeeezzzzus....get a life guys.....lose the motors, gut the lights, add a set on top of the bumper IF you need them.....sometimes you guys even surprise ME.....

Hey Aaron,
Sure that's not a photo of the Daytona GT?
Why not try to stripp weight anywhere you can from the car? Removing weight is like adding horsepower.

My friend bought his last kit a week ago 350.00 No cables. Another person sells the cable kit for 175.00 .
These were pretty exact replica parts.
It could be home made a lot cheaper. DIY project.

$525 is STEEP for the kit - but it definitely would be cool to have. I bet someone could reproduce this kit for less...

Why? Unless your doing a full on GT replica I fail to see the point. We're talking what 14 pounds or so for the motors? Run 3 gallons less of fuel in your tank/cell. Is it a coolnes factor thing? I just don't get it. If I wanted cable operated headlights I would not have sold my Opel GT.

My best,

Its not a coolness thing for me, I have no motors. I have to use a 12mm wrench to open my lids. Its a PIA, a cable wood be an upgrade.
$525 is pretty steep though, I am however trying hard to keep weight off the car.

If this was to be done (I have been thinking about it) I would want a cable that you could pull on to lower the lights and have them "click" lock down and use the same cable to mabe push to release them? Not sure. It is a cool idea, but I wouldn't want to go outside to lower my headlights on a driver. Track car, sure, driver no way. It sends a message to other people that something on your car doesn't work.

I still think it's dumb....BTW, the 20s were put on to screw with the ricers....seems to work.....a Honduh pulled along side me on the freeway and gave me the "look"....kicked the OD off and stomped it, the Vortech immediately started howling and pumped in boost.....backed off at 125mph.....he was a tiny blur in my sideview mirror.....
Cracked myself up....

OK, here is the deal. I just spoke to Steve from www.aircooledracing.com he is the present owner of the factory Max Moritz 914-6 GT car which now resides in PA.
After explaining to him what some of us are looking for in the way of a kit duplicating the mechanical headlights, he has told me he is willing to fabricate a kit based on the one that is on his GT.
He said it should be able to reproduce it a reasonable price. His car was featured in this months Excellence, a great article with a lot of photos. As soon as I get more info on the kit I will post it.
Check out his website its a great source for part for 914 & 911.

Jan 12 2005, 04:31 PM
Seriously, how many people want to do it?
I have mine 90% done and spend less than $200 on it.
It does not look like the GT method because I did not want to cut anyting. Its stripped down simple.
I dont have one length exact because the engine is out of the car and I need it level to make sure it within the limits of the headlight screws and Im not sure of the LBS rating is correct. ( I used 20lbs gas springs )
If there is some interest I will post pics/specs of the design..

hmmmm...I've got a few of these twin-chamber air-cylinders that could be used instead of a one way gas spring ....instead of using compressed air, vacuum from the engine can be used to open and close the headlights....as long as you have a good detent once opened/closed, you'd only have to supply vacuum to open or close it again
an accumulator can be installed in case the engine vacuum is too low due to an aggressive cam
the block is 1"x2"x3" for size comparison

Bimbas are great , pretty cheap to special order if they dont have the one you need on the shelf , also like you say up and down,
The factory way is cool if you want a factory type GT part.
The modern approach will work even better, and cheaper. Good Job
