Are the outside door handles interchangeable or are they specific to each side (driver/passenger)?

They are slightly differently shaped, so technically there is a left and right.... But yes they are interchangeable. You would have to really be looking for it to notice.

What would I look for to identify the side it belongs to?

back side of the handle either has a L or R on it.
