Dam, barely had time to consider buying this one!

It took me 2 hrs to get it on the trailer, corrosion was so bad on the calipers that I had to remove 3 of them to get it rolling.

Tim ; if I save this one it will be all original.

Next time just pull the pads from the calipers. I always bring a pliers, hammer, prybar, punch (knock the pins out) and a can of WD40. Soak the pads with WD40, pull the pins. Sometimes need the prybar to get the pads to come out. Oh and always bring an air tank (full of air)

If you are able to save it, do it. I know by west cost standards it might be to far gone, but they are getting harder to find that can be fixed. If you don't plan to repair it clean it up a bit and sell it has a project car if possible.

I tried that , wd40, hammer tried to pull the pads. They didn't budge. The quickest way was to pull the calipers.

I have had that happen before also. Sometimes a BFH and a 19mm wrench is all you need.

Paul - your a better 914 owner than me. I was going to part it.

Mark , I still don't know yet. I have to do more digging first . If I have to deal with floor pans and extensive hell hole repair, I will pRt it out.

Whatever you do, don't leave it stock.....sheesh

Great buy! So what's the rust situation? Hell hole ok? Floors? Hope it's not too bad since she's been sitting since '78 per the ad. They always look so nice in pics. Hope it's an easy resto. Love that color!

Here is what I see so far.

Bad :
Hell hole needs repair, Lonny's seems ok but jack post area are gone on both sides, rust by the drivers side top of the long. Rust on passenger's side sail, one engine shelf and battery tray is gone but the metal behind the tray is solid
I haven't take the rest if the rocker off yet.


good:
Both trunks are good
Interior and floors are solid and good
Doors open and close with jack and weight
Pedal area is good
Interior upholstery including dash is mint

Engine was last running on 3 cylinders
It was a tail shift converted to side.

I decided to save this one.
Looks like it is going to be my summer project.
This weekend I finally had a chance to see what's going on with this car.
Engine turns over, fuel pump is dead, fuel lines are clogged.
In the next few days I will be cleaning the tank, change the fuel lines to SS and replace the fuel pump.

Do you ever sit down ?

I spent a few days last week repairing h ) the jack post area of the longs and all most of the arrears that needs cutting and welding.

Today, I replaced all fuel lines with stainless steel and all hoses. also replaced and moved to the front the donated fuel pump ( mepstein) by mark, thanks mark.

Fuel tank is cleaned, treated and ready to go back in (hopefully in the morning)

Musta been some critter living in that long. Nice of it to help the rust process in the worst spot...

That was quick work, it would have took me months to do that.

What did you do to to treat the gas tank, did you use the POR-15 treatment kit or something else?

I know this is off topic but can someone post a pic of where their hood, cowl, fender and a pillar meet. I noticed something in one of these photos different from mine.

The tank was not that bad to begin with . Only surface rust on the outside . I treated the inside with vinegar. I filled it up and let it sit for a few days.
I sanded the outside surface rust , treated with por15, them use ratel can to spray it.

What size of a container of the POR is enough for the gas tank, quart?

The quart can is what you need.

My second attempt to get it started was unsuccessful again.

After changing all the fuel lines , no go.

I check for fuel and pressure.... Pass
Check vacuum lines from the plenum .......cracked- replaced
Still no go

Upon further diagnostic , I noticed that the trigger points were not connected from the ECU. One of the injectors grounds behind the engine was out of the spade. ( PO said that it was running on 3 cylinders and papers found in the car shows that he was shopping for a replacement motor) hopefully that was it..
I check the points and and there was no ground when the distributor spins ( bad point)

I corrected all of the above and replaced the points.
Since it was a bit late and I didn't wAnt to piss off the neighbors I left it as that. I didn't crank it. .... I think I have a good shot at getting it started tomorrow.

Next on my list is compression test.

We have been BZ.

most of the welding and body work is completed, longs sail etc.. we just need to cut and weld the battery area.

Ashton is doing most of the work with my supervision.

He change the push rod seals, adjusted the valves, dwell , we also managed to get the engine started. we will be timing this weekend.

I don't care if it is a 914 or a Pinto, working together on a project with my dad taught me most of what I know about cars and a lot about life. The time is well spent.

The compression was good then? And that single carb is temporary ?

I have done a few adjustments over the years . I intend to do a compression test soon as well.
Yes he's saving up for some dual webbers hopefully before he's able to drive it. He turns 16 in September.

Oh I'm sure you have done a valve adjustment, but it's impressive that your 15 year old son can do one! Or any of the other things you mentioned. You taught him well!
