Does anybody know where I can buy the mesh for the engine lid? I am trying to create a GT lid.

95% of the GT lids you see are 2 lids combined
normal swap meet price for a spare engine lid is $10 to $20 from what I have seen

I got my material from Mc Master Carr the material is an exact match, reasonable cost.

I'd like to have one made entirely of aluminum or some other lite-weight material
oh....just found some on page 2924 (Catalog 104)
hmmm, anyone know what size the mesh is?
along with aluminum, they have stainless, that might be neat if you want to polish it up......
you want "flattened" mesh, not the regular mesh
try looking up part number 9302T11 on-line to see othe sizes and materials

Thanks guys. I have an extra engine lid that's in really good shape. I'll look into both ways and determine which is the easiest.

Never heard of an GT engine lid. Can someone post a Pic? I thought the GT was mainly the wheel wells being flared.

GT engine lid has mesh all over. No closed area near the window.

Here is one I built from two spares - one as a donor of it's mesh and the other as a donor for the frame (I still have my original with rain tray for winter months).
Craig (Cametal) fabricated one after seeing mine, and in my view greatly improved on what I did. He used one solid piece of mesh - I think it has a cleaner look. Also he cut down the diagonal brace and cut large holes in it to reduce weight. It looks real cool and retains more rigidity. I'll try to get him to post a pic.

What material is that silver insulation stuff ? Can it be washed? Cab sound or heat better?

It's just the regular silver foil insulation material available at ACE, HoDePo, etc. A ten dollar roll of it will cover the firewall. It was installed by the PO, but I replaced it when I pulled the engine for an upper end rebuild.
It can be washed.
It's main job is to hide all the glue on the firewall the PO applied when he installed the first one. BTW, the original pad was also removed by the PO.
The main thing I like about it is the amount of light it bounces into the engine bay.
I was somewhat afraid of what I would find when I initially removed it, but thankfully there is not one spot of rust anywhere, top to bottom.
All that being said, if it were a daily driver, or if I drove it in the rain, inclement weather, etc., I would lean towards having nothing on the firewall other than paint. Many owners have found rust behind the original insulation pad.

The orignal insulation pad was behind the seats in the cab right? Ive never seen one in the motor bay. I thought it looked kinda neat and was just wondering if it made any improvements in the cab.

We sell the GT grill material for $50. Part number B91450401300. On another note there are two different styles. There is the 916 grill which is two pieces overlaped in the middle which covers the upper and lower and the GT rally grill which is two pieces, upper and lower and does not overlap. I hate to see people combine good engine lids.

for the most part, they are not worth too much, they don't really break, they don't get damaged easily unless someone is extremly careless with it.....it's hard to sell one for $20 at the swapmeets.....
just because the dealer or factory sells/sold them for $300 (wild ass guess), it does not mean the part is worth $150 used
If the material you have does match than yes, then even at $50 it might be easier to convert an existing lid using just the new material...

Yes, there are pads in the engine compartment. I don't know if a pad comes in every car (year & model) - others more knowledgeable can answer that. Seems that -6 did not have the pad?
There is another pad in the passenger compartment that is behind the seats and surrounding area. This pad has also been removed in my car.
Removing all the pads presents a savings in weight at the expense of less noise and thermal insulation.
The original pads are much thicker and denser than the silver foil pad (it does not equate to the originals).
Engine noises, especially with carbs, is noticeably louder with the GT lid than a stock lid with raintray.
Which for my preference is a good thing.
If it were a daily driver street car and I was commuting in it, I would want to stay with original pads and lid.

The engine compartment pad was installed from about 1973 up. That is why the sixes did not get it.
