I have a 72' 1.7 that has just had the "top end" done by a local VW store here in Phoenix. They did a good job.
The car, which I had recently purchased from a fella, had not been run since 93'.
In having the work done, along with with all the associated "other stuff" that needed to be replaced, I also had the clutch "refreshed" and had to have the flywheel replaced.
Total cost, installed-- $2,600.00
Then I slowly, have replaced, almost every fuel system componet on the car including the fuel lines themselves.
The fuel pump is the expensive guy!
Extra Total cost, installed-- $800.00
The car ran for a couple of weeks and then needed a starter.
I also got rid of the wet battery and went to a dry cell type.
Extra, Extra, Total cost, installed-- 350.00 ( I did the battery myself).
BUT,
The car is running (nearly) perfectly and all in all, I have "gotten away cheap" in that there happens to be so much "right" with the car, acutally.
It is some of the best money I have ever spent,
I use the car every day, for every trip, whenever possible.
It is only money.
