Hello all,
Need your opinion on what it would cost to have my 1.7 rebuilt. I want to keep it stock. Thanks in advance for your oh so gracious opinions. IPB Image

When you say rebuild, do you mean just refresh it or rebuild the whole thing? There are different options for rebuilding in some people minds. There is reringing the engine which means just hone the cylinders and install new rings, there is replacing the pistons and cylinders with new ones and there is rebuilding the whole engine with all new parts. The latter will cost you a few dunkets. Pistons and cylinders start around $350 and go up from there. Machine work on the heads will set you back anywhere from 200 to 500 for the pair. Case work and crank machining will cost you about 65 to 90 bucks. Then there is the cam shaft and all the bearings and gasket set. Its all in what you want to do and how much you want to spend.

You can freshen up the motor with a valve job and rering it. Or rebuild it and split the crank case and do the bottom end as well eg main and rod bearings and cam and cam bearings and new oil pump and on and on...

If it's on Ebay, rebuilt can mean new sparkplugs......

I have a 72' 1.7 that has just had the "top end" done by a local VW store here in Phoenix. They did a good job. IPB Image

The car, which I had recently purchased from a fella, had not been run since 93'. IPB Image

In having the work done, along with with all the associated "other stuff" that needed to be replaced, I also had the clutch "refreshed" and had to have the flywheel replaced. IPB Image

Total cost, installed-- $2,600.00 IPB Image

Then I slowly, have replaced, almost every fuel system componet on the car including the fuel lines themselves. IPB Image

The fuel pump is the expensive guy! IPB Image

Extra Total cost, installed-- $800.00 IPB Image

The car ran for a couple of weeks and then needed a starter. IPB Image

I also got rid of the wet battery and went to a dry cell type.

Extra, Extra, Total cost, installed-- 350.00 ( I did the battery myself).

BUT,

The car is running (nearly) perfectly and all in all, I have "gotten away cheap" in that there happens to be so much "right" with the car, acutally. IPB Image

It is some of the best money I have ever spent, IPB Image I use the car every day, for every trip, whenever possible. IPB Image

It is only money. IPB Image

Boy I bet you did not want to hear that. Do it yourself. Alot of help here if you have a dig camera. I dropped a valve and spent less than $400 one new valve and guide and all new springs, to get it running like a dream again.

Na it doesn't scare me too much. I was going to buy a tail dragger but I decided to put a few grand into my Teener instead. This is a car exactly llike the one I had when I was 17 so it's worth it to me to do it right. It runs well now but I just want to do some preventative maintenace on her.

My 75' car, I believe my oldest boy (seventeen),and I will rebuild this summer.

Just like your winter, we (Phoenicians) lay-up our projects till summer and work in the air-conditioned garage till the weather breaks. IPB Image Test drive at night. IPB Image IPB Image

I figure I 'll end up with similar money in the project but we will build a more robust motor in the end rocking nana.gif .

The 72 car is bone stock. IPB Image

My car is in WV IPB Image and I'm in Alaska doing a project for the Army for the next year so I'm keeping in contact by phone and email with one of my friends who has a restoration shop and he's going to repaint and have my interior done also. This is one car I don't trust myself working on.

Well if $$ not the issue buy a motor from Jake and get alot more bang for the buck. But then it would not be stock just fast.
