A drivetrain is available and I'm shopping for a new modern transplant for the Neo914. It's 1.6L, not supercharged, and I know BMW owns the company. Let me know your thoughts and knowledge...

It's a pretty plain-jane transverse fwd setup. I think the block is cast iron, so it's not likely to be all that light. BMW owns the brand, but they didn't have any hand in designing the drivetrain.

A related Q: has anyone successfully fit a transverse driveline to a 914?

Mike said he saw a Fiero tv in one...

OT, want your Paddy's back?

How about the A4/Passat FWD 1.8t and trans. Boxter cable shifter bolts on. TONS of mods and development. Common, ergo cheap. Somone is doing it now (I think his username is 1.8t) and I'm doing it soon. IPB Image

I saw his car and it is my second choice as a modern, reasonably priced powerplant.
Here is my research and choices:
1. 2.7 tt, may fit w/o firewall mods, not sure of turbo fit but plumbing can be modified, est. parts costs $6-8k
2. 1.8 t, seen Sonu's car, nice fit, tranny shifter needs fab'd linkage even with cables, turbo exits abruptly at shock tower, there may still be turbo lag, est. parts costs $5-7k
3. Boxster 3.2, seen Jason's and waiting on susp/fit development, est. parts costs $6-9k
4. 3.6 993, have mount, oil cooler, and provisions for tank but est. parts costs are still over $10k
5. Cayenne V8 tt, my $10K eBay bid was not enough, I came to my senses after the auction IPB Image
6. Chevy LS1 V8, likely needs firewall mods, done right it will cost $8-10k
7. Mini 1.6, nothing special, Cooper S would be better, transverse layout may not fit

Well I chose the Audi 2.7tt and it arrived last week. Compact and lots of power from a stock engine. smilie_pokal.gif Engine was cheap because it needs work but the tuning options will likely blow my budget. ohmy.gif I'll be on the audiworld and vwvortex boards...

the new mini drivetrain is (engine at least) derived from a chrysler neon motor. it is built in brazill by a jointly owned chrysler plant.

My Mini (not an S) has a fantastic little motor in it. Not too much torque, but it loves to rev and the power is sweet near the top end. My friend has an S and his car is QUICK.

I'm not sure what you are asking, because mechanically I have no idea if you could transplant a Mini motor into a 914, but from a drivability standpoint I think that alot of it's balance comes from a well mated motor/tranny combo.

Doug,

Many engines can be made to fit, I was just exploring choices...My decision is already made so I pass the mini powerplant choice to the next conversion pioneer... biggrin.gif

BTW, I added you to the conversion list, see the link in my signature. smilie_pokal.gif

The engine in the Mini is a South American built motor built to a Chrysler design and is a joint venture between BMW & Chrysler. Now that Chrysler is Diamler Chrysler BMW is making plans to use a differnet motor in the next revision of the Mini. BMW & Mercedes are the fiercest of rivals and I am actually surprised that D-C agreed to continue allowing BMW to use the engines after the take over.

The engine is supposed to be solid and a decnt performaer if a bit rough around the edges. I'm no Mopar guy but Chrysler has enjoyed success with their 4-cilyder deisgns for years (Daytona, Neon, etc.).

I'm not sure who th gearbox is sourced from.

2.7 tt eh??

Sweeeet!!!!

how much hp they run stock, and how much can they get??

I wanted a small high revving, turbocharged engine...

but things just fell into place for this one.

I cant wait to see what all your going to do next to it!!

What is the trani setup your going to use??

I am boldblue.gif , Sonu and my mechanic are boldblue.gif
Boxster 5-speed enroute, hopefully I got the correct year that bolts up. Otherwise I will be sawzall-smiley.gif and blowtorch.gif

Boxster 5 speed???

I want to see everything your doing.

I want a different trani in mine.

I know you are going on virtually no $$ limit here... but still.

Andrew,
You must be kidding. I just sold my retirement stock, 1st born child, spent savings, and ran up the credit cards laugh.gif but...I have a "vision". cool_shades.gif

B5 speed was only $1k which is cheaper than a rebuilt 901. I forgot to budget %50 for all this shipping! ohmy.gif
