So how many wires from the harness do I have going to the positive side of the coil and to the negative side of the coil?

normally 2 from the wiring harness
tach wire = - side
switched positive = + side
1 wire (if points) will go the the - side
if electronic ignition, it depends on the brand

and if you're running L-jet there is a white wire that goes to the (-) side
