OK, broke down and went to the dark side...

I bought a 1998 BMW 328i.

I know about the Peak tool to read the codes but am now thinking about a real scan tool for about $50 more..

Those of you who are using ODBII are using what????

I did find some available for around $220.

Auterra and autoenginuity...

anyone use these? Will they work with the BMW???
thanks, herb

IPB Image OBD II is universal--if any car that has this does--one reading tool will scan all of them--this was a federal mandate. It goes back to when the US auto manufacturers tried to initiate a congressional bill that would have simply put every single non-factory repair center out of business. they wanted to be the only ones to ever work on the car, as well as you have to bring the car to the dealer that it was bought from, even across state lines. They were very greedy--congress saw thru that plot and instead made law that all vehicles from '96 and up be able to be read on a universal scale by any person in the US that wanted to.

That said I have extensively worked with the Snapon brand reader--one of the best I have ever used.

Check with VAG-Com ( http://www.ross-tech.com/ )

They were working on a BMW version, perhaps they have beta available or are looking for testers.

Also see if http://www.bonnevillemotorwerks.com/ has anything available.
