My '76 has developed a habit of 5th gear sticking after running in 5th for awhile. It hasn't bothered me as I have a rebuilt spare in the corner. Today I read this in a Suby/Vanagon conversion forum. Same deal but here they discuss 4th sticking. I've also had a whine develop in the tranny and with the recent discussions of bearing failure in the intermediate plate I'm wondering if these two issues are related. What are your thought's?

I think we need far more detailed description of symptoms to pinpoint issue.

All shifts? or just between 3rd & 4th?
Engine off test (pull over, turn engine off, and quickly do test)

While cracked 3rd/4th slider hub is a strong possibility, an obvious and consistent change as trans cools may suggest otherwise.

Excessive heat during long distance cruising in 4th is a well documented problem. These two photos show one of the effects of this:

This is where the 4th gear idler is fusing to the thrust surface of the mainshaft ball bearing. Shifting out of 4th can feel sticky when this happens, AND the bore could be distorting enough to make ALL shifts balky, as the gear tightens down on it's needle bearing and thus the mainshaft.
