My most recent acquisition of a transmission hoard from a member here has largely turned into a turd fest. The member had gotten them in an estate sale for a departed friend of his. They was arguable not well stored...but I was not aware of how bad things would be. Boat anchors have less rust. Here are pics from the first 6. Have a barf bag ready.

I found a ZD gear with what actually looks to be a factory defect at the tips of the teeth. teef.gifClick to view attachment

And Mothra fell out of the remaining oil in a differential housing and gave me a nice start. (about 4" body)

These are as bad as the ones TC sent me way back when to rebuild. Sand and sea shells fell out of those. These were stored in a shed with poor cover and dirt floor, if I am not mistaken. The seller I bought them from had no idea and I dont blame him at all, just to put that out there. No misrepresentation was given. Losing on this one, unfortunately.

So whatcer sayin' is the turd polish won't get it in this situation? confused24.gif

At least you won't have to move them with you.

What would happen if you dipped the whole gear stack in phosphoric acid?
Would it help at all or just a waste of time

I had a 356 motor like that once.
Siezed and all.

I needed that motor...it was numbers matching
I tried alot of things.

Then I tried a product named Super Purple, sold at most autoparts stores.
I bought several gallons of it.
I filled up one of those large plastic boxes from home depot and submerged the whole mess for one day.
Came out totally clean.

I played around with it using some junk parts, it eats aluminum,
It cleaned rust right off the steel.

Give it a try, watch out how long you leave anything in the stuff.
Use gloves...the thick rubber kitchen gloves, not the thing ones you use for work..it will eat those too...

Really strong, but it might work for you...

Harvested what I could from 8 cores, scrapped the remains yesterday smile.gif Garage is more clean now. I still have 5-6 side shift cores. The one Kevin sent was perfect.

Not easily pictured was how poorly and incorrectly many of these transmissions were assembled. The ones pictured were the worst. All had rust, all had some form of incorrect assembly. No wonder they were removed, initially.

These pics are more for entertainment. I did get some good parts from the stash of stuff already removed smile.gif
rhodyguy
excellent. i hope the clinic group are in like condition.
CptTripps
Turn them into trophys for the next 914 get-together.

Dont want to buy a deep 30mm socket? Fuck it, air chisel!

Probably the death blow to this one was the wrong assembly of so many things....Those that have taken my class or watched my DVDs will spot this right away.

You never really know from " core" parts. I hope you did not pay more than $50.00

Nope, the band is on the wrong side of the blocks on the inside.

0396, what do you mean by ""core" parts"?

BTW, the two pictured were by far the worse. There were about 4 in this condition that I just took to the scrap yard. Others had salvageable "core parts" that will be fine. Far from a total loss on the whole deal. I still came out ahead smile.gif
