W engine code was used on 914 and bus engines. Bus engines have the dip stick in a different location. Probably a 1.7 case built into a 2.0 l.
Dies it have 2.0 heads?

W code was 914 and 411/412 1.7L engines from 70-71 no bus engines are W code.

On Brad Anders site he shows that to be a 71 1.7L engine number. You appear to be correct that W code was not used in a VW bus. The chart I saw just listed it as type IV.

yes this all seems to be true. So it is a 914 motor...high compression so maybe heads are different.

Here is what I see at thesamba. Now if i can narrow down if this is a 70 or 71. It may be the original motor...

Based on the serial number it is a 71 case. Who knows what is inside.
