Full Version: Trouble with Tie Rods...

Hi all...getting ready to install turbo tie rods and I'm trying to remove the old tie rods.
I have the outer end disconnected from the spindle and I'm trying to remove the tie rod and inner end together. This is easier said than done. Pelican article says to use the tie rod as a lever to loosen the inner end from the rack. Problem is that the worn inner bushing absorbs all the torque and the tie rod hits the body and has no where to go.
What am I missing here??

it should unscrew in the adjustment sleeve. never had the tie rod hit the body.

I'm not sure I know what you mean...I'm trying to remove the inner tie rod end and tie rod all together. I can't get it loosened from the rack.

I removed the tie rod ends from the rack is sent to you with it in a vise. The round part that holds the end of the boot acts like a jam nt with the tie rod end. I put a big punch through the tie rod end and turned it a small amount. Then I used a big hammer and punch to loosen the round disc thing. Once it is loose you can unscrew the tie rod end.

Maybe you can get a pipe wrench on it. Or if you have an air chisel with a blunt end use it in one of the notches of the round part.

Bruce...I'm having a hard time envisioning this. I need to remove the boot from the rack?

Pull the boot back on the outer end or pull it all the way down the tie rod. This is what it looks like. I have this one unscrewed part way

I see what you are saying now!!! How the hell do people do this with the rack in the car?

I did one but it was on a lift. Since you are going with turbo tie rods you do not need to worry about damaging the round disk. Turn the tie rod end slightly counter clock wise as viewed from the end, then turn the disc clockwise to un jam the two parts.
The toe rod will then un screw from the rack.

Thanks Bruce...that's really helpful. I take it I don't need that locking disc, but I do need the piece that the boot retainer attaches to? Correct?

Nope...I have that wrong. I don't need either of those 2 pieces.
