Full Version: Damaged front wheel bearing

Trying to solve my DULL ROAR link is to my old, original post from a few weeks back.
and I found this bent outer wheel bearing, the small one:

And the rear seal seems to be rubbing. Lot's of black dust here.

These are TIMKIN, I had a set of FAG brand and put them on, but the ROAR remained during the test drive. Still curious how a bearing could get bent like this in about 4000 miles. Anyone know what I did wrong?

Could you walk us through your procedure for adjusting these bearings? I would also look at the spindle and make sure it's not damaged.

The only way I can imagine getting that kind of damage would be to set the car down with the bearing only partway into the race.
I dont see how that can happen during normal operation.

And see the particulates around the seal. That looks like actual rubber wearing off the seal as if the bearing wasnt seated correctly and the seal was wearing irregularly around the spindle.

The picture of the bent front outer bearing is from when you are adjusting the bearing. You installed the nut and tighten it. The problem come when you put your screwdriver or flat edge in to check for the washers movement. You are actually prying against the sections of the bearing that is now bent.

After some web research, I am leaning toward too tight myself. I don't remember prying too hard. I can't imagine being able to bend the cage with a screw driver, but maybe.

When you put the screwdriver in to check washer movement, look where your at and try twisting it (as you normally use a screwdriver) against the hub itself. Use a larger screwdriver. Mine is 10mm wide at the tip.
