If you are looking for a race car this is great, if you want to make it a street car proceed with caution. It is illegal in my state to own a car with an altered VIN.

What's altered ?
Windshield tag, check
Aluminum body plate, check
Chassis number in trunk, check ( right series, ?)
VIN stamp, top of right front wheel house, ? not legible.

.......... both of the tags can be moved

There is no vin stamp on the right front fender.

The VIN stamp was cut out and replaced with a piece of steel
There is a 914/4 center vent on the dash and the Karman stamp is pretty far out of range. You can rivet the aluminum tags into a new chassis.

It does look like a VIN swap to me too.

Still has the 914-6 engine compartment fuel line clips intact ! laugh.gif

It appears that the front clip was replaced with a factory replacement. The replacement panels didn't have the front holes punched out.

That might explain the lack of a VIN on the fender ...

The rest of the chassis appears to be a real /6.

the VIN number is cut out and a piece of steal is welded in, you can see the weld on the bottom of the wheel house.

My point is, it looks as if the car had some major surgery and at least parts of the front replaced. The rear looks to be from an original /6.

It was not uncommon to splice two cars together after an accident back in the day.

My guess would be that this car was turned into a race car after it was crashed and at least some parts of an early /4 front clip were crafted on.

In which case they would have cut out the /4 VIN ...

I agree, a clip was probably performed but the VIN cut is a major no-no in IL (and probably most states) that is why it is not sitting my garage right now.

about 15 yrs ago i looked at a "six" with a correct VIN in the Sac'to area - it had been in a flood - but my second inspection trip (with cash in hand) revealed it had later "4" dash vents, etc - and pulling up the carpets revealed that the front half of the car was a "4" sectioned onto the sixer back half

- it is not a "straight across cut", so you might not notice unless you really know these chassis'

- a bodyman friend who'd worked at Gus Mozart Porsche confirmed that this was commonly done in the Bay Area "back in the day" - it's the same process routinely used to shorten a VW pan for a Manx body back-when

I passed on it, even tho i only was looking for a racer shell

(i've seen sketchier "original-6-GT" cars at some high-end vintage venues - some even still wear their "4" fender ID - obviously htis is not a concern in some circles)

I have also seen a similar real six "tub" in Sac'to area that had the RF fender/quarter replaced - that "could" explain no-VIN or "erased VIN" in the fender liner

I don't know where either of those shells went

if all ya want is a race car - then it's worth considering if cheap enuf

but if ya want a 100-point resto, 100K resale value - take your chances & buy a set of steel stamps and a good MIG
