was hoping for some tips on replacing the tail cone gasket.

Pull the tranny, stand it on the bellhousing, make a relief for the main shaft so it sits flat. Two 2x4's work great. Pull the cone, replace the gasket...

Almost just that easy.
Dr Evil
Do it in the car....but that may be frustrating. Lower the rear of the trans with a jock onto jack stands, pull the cone (drain first, of course), expect the idler gear, a flat bearing, and a notched washer to fall out. Maybe two needle bearings and a spacer, too. Take cone off slowly to be better prepared and you can keep most of these parts on the tail cone. Replace gasket, use thick grease to locate the notch washer and flat bearing, put the rest of the parts; gear and other parts, on the tail con shaft, and install.

Might save you time.....might just grow your vocabulary of salty words.

You don't even have to pull the tranny. Just remove the muffler, support the end of the trans, loosen the engine mount bolts, and tilt the whole thing down just a little bit. That should give you more than enough room to get the tail cone off.

Get the back of the car as high as you can. If it's high enough, you won't lose any oil. Place the linkage in neutral and disconnect the ground strap, remove the speedo cable and the muffler, support the tranny with a jack and remove the 4 8mm bolts that fasten the mounts to the body. Drop the tranny an inch or two and remove the perimeter bolts that clamp the cover to the tranny housing. Pull the cover off, clean the mounting surfaces well with a new single edge razor blade. Install the gasket, apply a dab of grease to the idler bearing and the thick washer to stick them to the case, pull the idler out on the shaft, slide the cover into place and reinstall the hardware, tightening all nuts to 18 ft/lbs. Raise the tranny into position, tighten the bolts and nuts, reinstall the muffler, the speedo cable, and the ground strap. Put the car on the ground.
Done.

ok,

I have the engine/trans on a dolly cart on jack stands.

so I will be using some of everyone's responses.

i have read other bits on the web and i have felt like procrastinating.

now i will do this today.

you all are truly appreciated.

thank you

well... after a while, I did it with your help...

at first I thought that the grease was to keep the notched washer and

needle bearings on the spindle (A) in the tail cone.

then I decided to place just the greased notched washer in place (second image

highlighted area) as I was having problems keeping the washer lined up when

it was on the spindle (A).. not saying how LONG it took to figure that out.

once I did that and then reread the instructions I was able to understand

what you were telling me.

I also changed out the O ring and the rubber gasket inside the speedo.

I wonder if people that have completed one car..... want to do another just

because it should be faster the second time??

this is taking longer than I thought and I have everyday to work on it.

thanks again gentlemen for the tips/instructions/HELP.

appreciated every time...

agree.gif with everything. Yes I want to use what I learn till it gets boring, and the folks here are like free diamonds with a bag to hold them in.
