915 vs 901 ... 901 can handle to about 280-300hp/torque. 915 can handle closer to 450-480hp/torque.

901 was used on late 60s to mid 70's (74-75) 911s and all 914s. It's a 5-speed aluminum-magnesium case. 5 speed + reverse. the 914 version had an 'odd' shift pattern and the lockout on 1st/reverse gears. the 911 version had a normal pattern and a lockout on 5th & reverse.

The 915 trans was used on all 911s until, i think, the early 90's when the 993 came out (G50-50/tiptronic). all aluminum case. 5 speed + reverse. Same pattern as the 911-style 901 trans.

Now, if you want cool... do a Sport-o-matic swap

so - just for clarification, the shift pattern of a '914' 901 and a 911's 901/911 is identical.

Porsche went to the 915 in 1972 with the 2,4 liter engine and kept it, through various internal redesigns, right through the 911SC.

I believe that the 901 had the same pattern on both 914 and 911. They were used on the 911 until the advent of the 2.4 emgome om 1972.

915 box was on the 911 from 72 through 86 (carrera 3.2)
The G50 was introduced in '87 (still on the Carrera 3.2), was also used in the 964 (different version) and the 993 (6 speed) and even today's 996 GT3

Anyway... If I get your question right, you're asking if you can mount a 915 LSD in a 901/914 box

From what I picked up from other discussions here on the BBS, the 915 diff comes in 2 types: with a fine spline and a coarse spline.
One of those also fits the 901/914 box (can't remember which one)

No.... I see a G-50 for 350..... and a 915 for 350...

hey - i didn't say it *stopped* with the SC, just that it was used through the SC.
beyond that i wasn't sure.
i get fuzzy on the new cars ...

901 - it's in the car and works.

915 - you buy a used one, send it to HPH in Feb of 2004 for conversion for 914 use and you wait about a year and still don't see it!

dealbreaker IMO unless you have big torque requirements.

Nope.

A 914 'box is about 75lbs. I believe the 915 is about 125lbs. Not twice, but pretty close to twice.

Mine sure didn't feel like it weighed 125 lbs when I installed it. Heavier than a 901, but not that much more.

Hell my 930 trans didn't weigh much either. I lifted all of them by hand and lined up the clutch splines/input shaft splines alone. (so I kind of doubt 125lbs., but probably 100 at least.)
