has anyone else had a gas pedal that will stick down and wont return until you pull it pack up? I have oiled all of the hinge points but it didn't work. I have resorted to putting a spring on cable linkage, but it still sticks sometimes.

any suggestions?

Check to see if the cable is wrapped around the clutch tube or anything else in the tunnel. You'll need an inspection mirror for a good look. Otherwise I'd look at the cable or rust/trash build up in there.

Mine did the same thing and I had to get a new throttle cable.

I don't know if this is your problem but this is what was causing mine to stick. I replaced the cable and I made sure it was not wrapped in the tunnel but it still stuck sometimes.

I made sure the cable was routed correctly to the engine which means shortest distance possible.

I looked under the car and noticed that there was a sharp angle when the cable came out of the firewall. I took a small fuel line and cut it to 2 inch length then split it and placed over the cable near firewall and secured tightly with zip ties. This prevented sharp cable angle coming out of firewall.

No problem since.

Possibly a cable return spring at the motor end not hooked up? Not all cars have 'em. I see them on carb pictures a lot.

Check the pedal bushings. OE are plastic. If they get some brake fluid on them they will swell up and stick. Replace with brass/bronze. Detach the cable at the pedal and check to see if it is free. Could be bad cable or wrapped around clutch cable.

All D-jet 914s have return springs, and some have 2. IIRC, 1.8s have one, as well.

I've had an issue with the gas pedal rod hanging up on my pedal board and not returning to the home position. It was just barely catching the edge of the cutout in the board. I didn't get my pedal board quite in the right position when I put it back in. Of course, I believe my board is a home built job so YMMV.

I have a new cable I will check the bushings.

I had a similar issue once and it was because there were too MANY springs trying to return the throttle.
It was causing the cable to bind.

I removed one and it moved smoothly.

Probably not your problem, but I have seen it.
