Makes me feel old- the new Porsche dealer in Cedar Rapids, Iowa at the time (Gruber Porsche+Audi) needed to get a 914 from Minneapolis to CR for their grand opening. It was a European model, blue, with the VW portion of the VW-Porsche emblem on the back panel covered up and a Wolfsburg symbol on the steering wheel instead of a Porsche crest. One of my best friends (also a gearhead and future 914 owner as well) and I offered to drive it down from Minnesota- drove up in a Audi 100LS (remember those??) Was in the winter and must have been 1969... ah, memories...
Great synopsis above BTW...

I was just thinking...couldn't they have waited 3 days and had the premier on 9-14 instead of 9-11?

I remember the premier of the 914 well! I was a junior at the University of Georgia. I thought the 914 design was beautiful and I wanted one badly. The 914 became my carrot. When I graduated from UGA, I got a brand new Bahia Red 73 which I still have today! I had to get a red one because UGA's colors are red and black. A traded in my 68 VW Fastback for my 914!
Note: I got married on 9-16-69! That marriage only last 362 days! But my love affair with the 914 has lasted 16,425 days and counting!

Wow, 45 yrs ago I was starting 1st grade, was still recovering over the moon landing just 3 weeks back, had no idea what a 914 was & the only thing I knew about Porsches is that his green 917 kept beating my purple Ferrari every time my Dad & I raced with my original hot wheels

In that first post, the arch for the front wheel well is a little rounder than usual...

That's because that car has a 908 engine in it and was built for Dr. Piech...

Great reference material! The 1.7 type 4 engine shown in the article is from a different application. Type 2 or type 41, 42, or 46 (411/412). As we know, type 47 is the 914.

I'm amused that they think all US-bound 914s had L-jetronic FI...

Watch the 'race practice' video. He almost ran over a guy trying to cross the street!
