I was stripping a parts car today and found a little rubber boot on the latch end of the engine lid release cable? Anyone ever seen one of these? The car is a 71. None of my cars ever had one of these.

Ya, solid cable, but the part in that link is for a heater cable tube. this is for the engine lid cable. I wonder if someone installed a 911 grommet on this one.

I looked up the part number in pet as the engine lid cable grommet. I thought the heater cables used a bellows. Pelican also shows use of it on 930's.

Strange, I just thought it was interesting. BTW, the heater cables have a cone shaped grommet.

The heater cable nipples are a little small, but I wonder if the clutch cable bellows would work?

My '74 had that. I bought a new one from the infamous "lost warehouse" when I was restoring it and it promptly fell apart. I have seen the remains of them on several P-N-P wrecks...

Yes, they were installed on all the cars but the quality of the rubber was lacking. Most died quickly. They were installed to keep water out of the tube.

Really it kind of looks like that 911 heater cable grommet on the link Bruce posted.
If you want to check it out I'll mail it to you. I should have just tossed it into the box I sent to you today.

I have the 914 heater cable nipples, this is a little larger, but I could make in a high quality silicone.

Mike, I didn't realize that you already produced the heater cable nipples. I'm adding them to my long list being compiled for you. Thanks

Ya actually the heater cable tubes are smaller and the grommets are cone shaped not blunt or cap shaped. I'll mail it to you. You can have a look see.

These are pretty simple to make, so yeah, why not make them out of a better material.

Standard equipment........ but usually long gone.
Prevents rust in tube of engine release cable and keeps lube in.
An item some luminaries have not seen ????
