So I went to hook up the fuel pump of my '70 914 and couldn't find the ground and power wires off the main harness. Car had carbs and I decided to go back to F.I. you know old school. Snooped around and found out I have a newer harness then stock. I also have a newer steering column then stock.

What I need to know is: since the relay board 14 pin plug is only using 12 pins can I just hook up 2 more wires and pretend it is a '70 wiring harness for the fuel pump to be back in the engine bay ? How do I reroute or change the relay plug to get a ground and power wire back to the fuel pump?

I want to keep the fuel pump back in engine compartment. I don't have a diagram that tells me how the 14 pin plug is wired differently in a 75 then in a 70. I just replaced the fuel lines with s.s. and just bought a new 3 port fuel pump.

Finally, can somebody tell me what is the color of the fog light wires from a '75?

I went through this several years ago. I put a '74 harness and steering column in my '70 car.

While the main harness was relatively easy to put in, the steering column was not!

Turns out, the mounting subframe is different between early cars and late cars and it required some creative sawzall-smiley.gif and smash.gif to make it fit.
In addition, the steering linkage going down to the steering rack is also different between early and late and i had to re-notch several of the linkage connections to prevent it from binding when turned.

It was a royal pain in the rear ...

Check the wiring diagrams (on Pelican, or in Haynes) to make sure what each wire does. The color coding should be pretty consistent, but you want to make certain.

If the newer harness is from a car that had the fuel pump up front, you will probably find the connections in the front trunk.

Not sure from the posts where you're at with this, if you have a 75 harness/steering column to put in the 1970, or if its already been done and you just found out about it. That conversion would be challenging as Andy describes, from the steering column mounting.

The fog lights on a 75 are yellow/white, just two wires in single box connectors. The 75 requires a separate extension harness for the big bumpers, that plugs into the 2 box connectors.

You may be in luck with the 75 harness...at least some of them have a fuel pump tap within a foot of the fusepanel It may be wrapped under the harness tape, it has a green wire from the relay plate (check for a green wire at pin 13), and a black/red wire to the front fuel pump, in a 2 wire branch with a common female wire terminal. You could run a heavy gage wire from the tap to the rear easily, then run a separate brown wire as a ground from pump to chassis. The 75 also only has the red/black power wire in the harness. The ground for a '75 is a short 14 ga brown wire directly from the pump to a tab on the chassis.

Harnesses from 914's routinely sell for about $75. I would place a WTB for the correct harness and be miles ahead.
