It seems my mechanic made a little boo-boo on his first trans job. (Free labor) Got everything back together- long story short- and I got 5 reverse gears!! And I can't get it into reverse. Can some of you guys give me a rough estimate of what this will cost to fix if I bring the tranny in to a shop.? I live in Mesa AZ and it seems things are less expensive here. Thanks.

Sounds like the differential is flipped. Easy fix but it needs to come apart. If you bring the tranny to a local shop... $200-$300 depending on their proficiency. Dr. Evil might do it cheaper if you send it to him.

Try mike. Under $200 round trip + what ever labor is. You might need to send him a gasket set.

Probably not worth a search of the previous threads to see if somebody has done this previously.
So you could document the procedure. Take lots of pics!! It could become a classic!

Call Bill at Arizona transaxle. Tell him 914 Mike up north told u to call, he has a websitehttp://www.aztransaxle.com, they do good work. Shop near Indian School and 17 fwy.

No one has said it, so I will. How many gears has a French tank? Same as your 914, 5 reverse and 1 forward

No offense intended but...... Pay Mike to go back through the whole thing. If your mechanic can't get the R&P in right on his FIRST tranny rebuild, I'd be worried about the rest of the work

I hear about this happening so much that I am confused.
I have had 3 trannys completely apart and back together and must have gotten lucky?.
I must have put them back together the right way without even being aware that it was possible to "flip the diff".
So if it is wrong, you can just pull the diff out without removing the core?
But then you would have to pull the core to put the diff in first?
If it's the other way around, then you have to pull the core either way I guess?
Just trying to picture messing it up.

In the 914, you put the diff in first and then put the gear stack into the case. In a 911, you put the gear stack in and then put the diff in. (I hope I don't have that backwards!!)
If you do it the wrong way around, you'll get five gears in reverse.
Happened the first time I rebuilt mine. My mentor had built hundreds more 911 transmissions than 914 ones, and didn't catch the error until I had bolted it together.

Mike is Dr Evil. He is the famous 914 transmission specialist, and medical doctor (as in MD). He runs semi annual 901 transmission clinics for DIY'ers, but he also does trans rebuilds. Look him up on this site, Dr Evil and read his .signature files. He has done over a hundred rebuilds when you add in his clinics.
