Can someone school me on axle shafts on a '70/6? Are they the same as the 911? Can I replace the CV's on my car or do I need to buy a complete axle shaft assembly.

914 PET 501-00 #(20) shows 914.332.009.03 drive shaft complete for 914-6. It doesn't break the assembly down to axle and CV joint.

That said, pelicanparts lists the CV joint and the complete 914-6 axle as NLA and to me, nothing in the parts references says 914-6 and 911 are same (by part #) although physically, they could be the same I have no experience with that.

The 914-6 axles are longer than 911 axles, but have the 911 spline-count. 914-6 CV's are the same diameter as 914-4 with a 911-splined inner race.

If you want to remain stock, a complete axle is a possibility, or you can use 914-4 CV's and an aftermarket, free-floating axle like SwayAway that's the right length and with 914-4 splines... which are the same as the 944 spline-count BTW.

911 axles are short than 914/6,
911 axles from 1965-1977 are larger in diameter than 914/6.
there is no single replacement CV from a 911 that will work without changing other components.

I don't have a /6, but I do have all the running gear from one. All I did was use /4 axles and cv's. I'm not sure if the axles are different lengths from a 4 to a 6, but I haven't had a problem since I've had the car on the road.

Someone correct me if I'm steering Keith in the wrong direction.

This is exactly what I did a few years ago. I had some old -4 axles
with junk CVs so I got new CVs from one of our members that modifies
the beetle ones. -4 and -6 axles are the same other than spline count.

Put the 914-6 axles/CVs in storage. Once installed no one will know anyway.
Of course you re-use your stub axles.

What are the differences between -4 axle assemblies and -6's? For those doing a conversion from -4 to -6, can you just use the -4 axles (assume a low hp -6 engine)?

I used the 914-4 axles and CV's for several years with a 2.7L engine. Those axles worked with both the 914-4 and 914-6 stub axles in the trailing-arms.

If/when you convert to 5-lug in the rear, to stick with 914 running gear you'll have to get 914-6 stub axles in the trailing arms. Then both 4 and 6 axles/CV's are fine.

Frankly, it's often no more expensive to go with larger 100mm CV's and 911 output flange/stub-axle by the time you pay for 914-6 stub axles. There are several good links here on that mod. I ran the 914 gear even with my 3.6 until the CV's wore out. Then converted to 944 CV's on modified 914-4 axles.

All of that might be beyond your scope but it's all documented on this site, whichever option you choose.

Complete axles are available from Porsche for under $300 per side depending on where you shop. They will bolt up to either the 4 or 6 stub axle. They are plug and play and have a Porsche warranty.
