I recovered my door panels today in red basketweave to match my recovered dash face. The old panels had the cut out for the door handle, but before I cut into my newly recovered ones I was wondering how easy it would to make my own leather door pulls, like these ones I saw on a set of panels off ebay:

Has anyone done this themselves or have any pictures of how the strap attachs to the door opening mechanism?

Thanks

A few people claim to have done it but I have not seen any photos of the modifications that are necessary to make the door open. For the trim pieces to work the new linkage needs to be inside the door. I made up the linkage but I'm not happy with it yet.

Thanks David. My car's at the shop right now, when I get it back I guess I'll start trying to figure it out myself too.

john77 - I would like to see pictures of the red door panels. I have always loved a red interior with a silver exterior...Just working up a Macan turbo on the configurator in silver w/red leather.

Hi Cairo, here's a pic. I think the line between the black and the red could be a little cleaner, but I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out.

I always loved the red/silver combo on early 911s, that's what inspired me. I didn't want to over do it though - while I think full red works on a 911, I wasn't sure about a 914 - the only other red in my interior right now is the matching basketweave dash front.

Thanks Andrew. I got the basketweave from here, it's for a VW. You can order free samples off the site if you want a closer look. One yard was enough to do my dash face and both door panels, with a little to spare.

I have no idea if it's a good match to the original - my car's a complete bastard so I wasn't really worried, I just wanted a red basketweave.

What seats do you have in the car, thats my real burning question!
Larmo63
If you've gone that far, maybe do the seat inserts too?
Harpo
That Red does look very sharp and thanks Mark for those links. Exactly what I was looking for.

Possibly in the future. I've been working my way through the interior since I got the car 12 months ago. I got the new seats and had them reupholstered 6 months ago, before I decided to try the red out. It was kind of on my mind then, but I wasn't 100% sure and doing it seemed a bit of an expensive risk if it turned out I didn't like it.

I put the dash panels back on with ultra-thin velcro instead of the foam tape, that way I figured if I hated it it would be really easy to change it back. biggrin.gif

how much were the seats?

They're 914 factory Recaros, I got them from the shop that works on my car, TRE Motorsports up in Van Nuys.

I started autocrossing and wanted seats with more support, and was looking at a pair of those GTS seats. Then my car was in for some work and I was talking to Dave about it and he goes, well, we have these for sale...

My ego did the car logic math (damn you ego) and convinced me, wellll, they are only a little bit more expensive, and they're the real thing, sooooo... And now they're in my car biggrin.gif

I'm second in line after Mike biggrin.gif

Ended up getting all the parts for the door pull from Bob at appbiz (alas, no bezels). Two leather straps with eyelets and all the hardware necessary to mount the pull and the plastic handle into the door. It meant drilling 3 holes to mount Jack nuts but was pretty straightforward.

I will try to post a 'how-to' in a few days, if anyone's interested.
