So, I have this long time ,not finished project . (thats a under statement !) Today I got some tires so I could move it around and put it up on the rack. (didn't have a rack when I started. ) Last time I worked on it I had done some soda blasting. ( Harbor Freight tool. ) I started doing some general clean up.(that stuff gets in every where.)After that I put it up on the rack. And had a look around.

This car came from Texas and to my glassed over eye's,almost no rust ! Can this be ? I kept looking and it just looked better and better. ( after seeing some of the car's being repaired here I figgered the worse.

Here is my dilemma. I want a 914 GT like the Lufthansa race car. I was going to use a Subaru STI motor and have the Kennedy stuff for the trans. ( got the car with no motor or trans) Having been at it for so long, things have changed and may go with the Subaru trans ? With all the good steel in this chassis l'm thinking I will need to go steel flairs. Instead of the Glass . Or is it better to just leave it stock ? I don't like the stock power. (had one in 79 almost new) And their is the front fender/driver side hit/repair to think about. She will never be a original.I'm rambling !

Stay stock ?
Build a wantabe ?
Other ?

Here are some shots of the steel.IPB Image

A little more info. I can't see spending the money for a 911 6 motor and the stuff that will need to be added. It will never be a 914-6. That is why the Subaru idea. And I like the Subaru motor system.

May even look into a EG33 ? Love the sound !

"What do you all think ?

Well, my personal thoughts are:
1- get it drive-able first
2- stuff any engine in it
3- upgrade the engine to satisfy your soul afterward

Things like:
Narrow body versus wide
Porsche four versus six banger
Suby versus SBC
...and other things...

are all ideas to ponder after the jack stands are back in the closet. Those ideas are best pondered with a fine red wine while the hair is still disheveled and the whine of the drive is still ringing in your ears.

A day spent out driving with the top off is a good day indeed.

Get it running then tackle one upgrade project at a time.

IDK,

I'd decide on what body style you want first. Wide body, narrow, etc. and focus on that first.

Once the body is in order, your motor options are pretty much wide open.

If it were me in your shoes, I'd throw out "stock" and go with maybe a Raby's motor or some other "enhanced" setup that would be a easy "fit".

OH, maybe a budget first, some estimates that you need to double.

Then go driving.gif

Assess the body repair first. That jack point is not all you'll find. That corner area beneath the batt tray looks suspicious also. Take a pic from the top looking down into that corner. Poke around with the ice pick if unsure. With power upgrades come chassis upgrades. Suby is a fine choice and makes the car "very affordable to own" as well. The EG33 is a proven design and readily available. There may be some issues with Cold Waters cradle and the EG confused24.gif It is the heavier and larger of the Suby 6's. Chris H. as well as Bigkat83 here, have done this conversion and might be of help.

Will need to get a shot of the passenger side battery area.

Their are some small pin holes at the driver side rear, outer floor and passenger side front, outer floor.

Nice car to start with. Check that suspension ear carefully. It looks cracked but could just be the paint.

Thanks,Rick. I'm hoping it will work ? So good so far .

Yep,the white paint is coming off in big flakes.

Ya, made the ear look cracked in that photo. There is a few issues but there are guys here that are drooling right now. Get busy. My suggestion, don't make a big project out of it the first time around.

Looks solid.

You should realize that whatever you do, you're going to blow through any budget.

The 914 is a blank canvas and a lousy investment.

Build it the way you want to. If money is an issue, you'll likely never finish.

I'm a fan of the P/6 even though there are way better power to cost options. What would be cool is a Boxster powered 914 but that's not something that has been done yet, likely for a reason.

Going to move back to my build page.
