Is it possible to start from scratch and build a 914....everything new? I know it would be serious pricy, but i was wondering if it was just possible...how/could you get it titled? oh...answered my own Q...no VIN
ArtechnikA
once upon a time you could get a "body in white" from Porsche (who got it from Karmann...) those are long gone, and were (legally) used only to replace a vehicle that had already been issued a VIN.

people build cars from scratch all the time - tube-frame street rods. you can build a tube-frame mid-engine car and hang 914 bodywork on it. if it has all the safety equipment your jurisdiction requires there will be a provision for assigning a VIN to your chassis and ta-da you have a homebuilt.

But why bother? I dont think you could ever get your money out of it. Unless you want to use it as a coffin for when you die. biggrin.gif

There are a few tube frame cars out there that have 914 bodies on them. They use them for racing.

I'm with ArtechnikA . . .

You could probably do all of it legally as well.

Build a tube frame and hang the body panels on it. Use the windshield frame and attached vin tag from your existing car and make the rest look as "factory" as you can. Since the 914 is a unibody, without a separate "frame" you wouldn't really be swapping "frames" but simply upgrading the suspension and suspension mounting points.

You wouldn't swapping bodies, but simply replacing poor/rusted/unsafe body panels with factory or aftermarket replacements (body shops do this all the time . . . ) The car will still have the same vin. Since you didn't use any other vehicles frame/body parts/mechanical components, you simply upgraded and improved the ones that were already there. Same body, same non-existant frame, same drive-train lay-out, just better.

You are just doing it all at once. If you repaired or customized or improved your car over a decade of ownership, none of it would be an issue. Nobody would care, nobody would know.

Luck,

Just a thought.....figured that a new fresh 914 might be better than finding a beat-up one. Can't afford to do either.....
