Pelican tech article mentions 34-35 btc as a good setting.any opinions?
Steve Snyder
Seems high to me. I'm at 27.

Which distributor? What cam? Which carbs? Engine configuration? Exhaust?

All of those have at least some influence on what timing is needed. The best way to set it is probably to use a dyno with a good set of gauges, including cylinder head temps for all four cylinders.

Well, in that case you would also need the exhaust gas temps for all four cylinders.

I'm running a 2056, Webcam 86 cam, Weber 40 IDFs, Pertronix SVDA distributor.

I've found 27-29 works well for my config. But I don't have a CHT gauge.
