Will a stock 914 work or will I need a 911 starter? Which models are applicable besides the original year? I need to start looking.

My stock 914-4 starters have always worked great for anything up to a 2.7. Only cause I have never had a 3.0 or bigger in a 914 is why I don't know about those. cool.gif

Thanks Dan, so I know a 914/4 starter will work..I guess it's safe to assume that any 911 starter would turn the engine over just fine but I don't know about the mounting to our tranny. I ask because I may find a better deal on a 911 starter than 914 (since I don't have either at this point) so I'd take that.

There were two 911 starters....one was essentially the same as the 914 starter in horsepower (kW), the other was about twice that.

Stock starter (914 and 911)....0.8 kW

Stock starter (911).....1.5 kW (checked the 1976 model...Bosch SR68X rebuilt)

What SLITS said. agree.gif But unless you have a 10.5:1 motor or something, the stock 914-4 (same as 911) starter will be fine.

The 914 starter is an SR 17x. The 911 starter, to 1977, is an SR 17x. Guess that kinda makes them the same ................... From '78 through at least '88 it's an SR 82x, just a bigger and more powerful version of the earlier one. BTW, the T3 VW full automatic cars used the SR 17x as well, as did the earlier Automatic busses. You CAN use it on 12v VW stick shift cars when the tranny starter shaft bushing hole is chingered up. You CANNOT use the 12v regular VW starter on ANY 911/912/914, and the chain parts stores don't have a CLUE what a 914 uses for a starter ........... The Cap'n
