hi, do you think a hand like this and a partially-functioning brain could partake a adventure tapping a exhaust stud out to 9mm and then getting a heli-coil to fix my little VW pop problem

i s'pose, but if you're willing to tap to 9,0 mm why not just install am 8,0/9,0 repair stud ?

That timesert kit looks a lot like the heli-coil kit I have. What's the dif.?

a Helicoil is simply a coil of (approximately) square-section wire designed to repair damaged threads in alloy or to add steel threads in alloy - many spark plug holes are HeliCoiled from the factory.

a TimeSert is a steel sleeve.

both are staked in place with a special (and non-interchangeable) installation tool.

for completeness, another insert is the Case-Saver. like the TimeSert it is a solid sleve, but it features very coarse threads designed to provide maximal grip in weak alloy - such as a 911's magnesium case, famous for pulling studs...
