With the amount of cars running around supercharged today has anyone looked into adapting one to a 914 yet? I know a few of the Toyota models used remote mounted units and have electric clutches to control operation. I wonder if the pulley system that was used on the air pump equipped cars could be adapted to run the supercharger instead? Too much load on the crank?

It's been thought of. Even done a couple of times. I always thought there wasn't enough room on the front of the engine for a good drive setup, but some people seem to make it work for a while at least. And I don't really know where you'd put the drive other than on the front. Try a search on here for "supercharger", and you'll find quite a few discussions. And maybe an actual build thread?

Turbos are a lot more flexible in how you position them. They're also more efficient; they do not take power directly from the engine to run them. (They do add exhaust restriction which reduces power, but not directly.)

In one of my Supercharger books I have, they have a chapter with pictures and information about Porsche doing a study comparing turbochargers and superchargers, the turbo won due to the hp loss with the supercharger.
