For those of you who are more familiar with the DMV and its in and outs...

I have a 71 914 that hasn't been registered since 1998 (says expires 1999, so that means 1998 I think). Does anyone know when/if cars fall out of the DMV system and you don't have to pay all the back fees? I went in a talked with the local DMV a year ago and it was still in the system.

Yeah. I argee with the othe post it takes a hell of a long time. My teacher go lucky and know a DMV person and they were able to move things around for him. Other wise he would have had to pay out of his a$$ and bow he just has to pay $45-60.

I don't believe you will need to pay the back fees. I have done it before where I just pay the new license fee and smog if needed and go. The best place to deal with DMV issues is your AAA Club. Well worth the dues per year just to not have to deal with the DMV clerks. You can do everything there except your personal drivers license issues.

you can 'non-op' the car for those years and pay the non-op fee and then re-register it.

I had to do that to sell my 356.

Yea, do the non-op thing at AAA! That should work! It will still take a year or so!

I think seanery is right, both cars I bought there were in non-op status, and I did not have to pay back fees. But I took them both to colorado. I later found out how lucky I was by not getting pulled over, cause they could have held the car In CA till it was straighted out! blink.gif Both times I did a fly and drive I was pulled over with expired tags, once only 2 miles into nevada, Whew! When I called the CA DMV cause I had a prob with one of the titles the lady was very nice (the car had hundereds of dollars of back fees) After I told her I flew in and drove the car back to CO, she told me to hang up and call "her" back and restate that I "trailered" the car to CO. And all was well biggrin.gif

It took me from August to the end of December to get it all done.
It was done through telephone calls and mail. I did it from Indy.

Make sure to get everyone's name and tel. no. and extensions.
They have a way of forgetting & giving different info depending
what phase the moon is in!
