Hello to you all 914 enthusiasts smile.gif

New to the 914 community I have this crazy project to bring a 914 from los angeles to canada east coast and I am looking for some pointer to remotely buy the car since I can only take 2 weeks of holiday in April.
My girl and myself figured if we wanted to enjoy the trip we need the car to be ready for a 4000 miles journey when we get there and not lose time looking for a car!

I spotted a 76 in los angeles that look pretty clean but I would need recommendation for a shop or a reputable individual to look at it for me and maybe help in the transaction.

I am also looking for any advice you guy can come up with concerning must have spare part etc.. Maybe bring a clutch cable? some tools a multimeter...

If you guys can come up with a good 914 mechanics in the los angeles area to inspect it that would be great.

Thanks for your help and i cant wait to be a part of this community biggrin.gif

What part of the east coast? I would have a very thorough check up done where you purchase the car, members here can direct you to who can do that based on location. The admins might give you the location of members who could help you if you run into a snag, planning your route based on that info would be wise plus you could do lunch with fellow members! I hope you have a trouble free trip! I'm in Moncton if that helps.

I've driven from the SF Bay area to Seattle, along the coast, in two days. So LA to Canada west coast would be doable in 3-4 days, with time to take in the scenery.

However, i would *NOT* do that trip in a 914 that i didn't have the utmost confidence in. Especially not in one that was new to me.

Buy "Betsy" from TC in Florida. That's a car that's already done the kind of trip your talking about and looks great to boot.

Someone selling a '76 in California would be very motivated to sell to someone out of state since the '76 has to pass CA emissions which is close to impossible. You should be able to get a very good deal on a good car; if not, walk away.

Not so, I bought a 1976 912E in California 3 years ago. It came with a valid CA smog certificate and had passed smog on a regular basis. It has the same engine as a '76 914. Only difference is L-jet versus D-jet fuel injection.

So some news on the 914 remote buying front. The guy I am dealing with says he is a ASE mechanic and dont want the car to be taken anywhere near another shop. Seems like an understandable situation if the whole thing is true of course. Anyone here in the LA area wanna check it up for me? can offer cash or loads of beer when i get there as you wish biggrin.gif.

I am an ase certified mechanic as well and would not mind if someone else looked at a car I was selling, as long as he is being honest there should be nothing to worry about.

One of those pictures was taken at Marty's get together's here in Los Angeles. So if that ad is real....that person should be on this board. That ad looks a little suspect given the location of the first shot

My suggestion is that you deal with a known person from this board.

Where exactly is the car (LA is a very big place) and do you feel comfortable revealing the shop it's at or owned by?

Since John Williamson (Otto) passed, I don't know who is the "go to" guy for 914-4 work right in LA, but up north a bit you've got Kap'n Krusty, east Glenn Sager and south Mike Mulligan to name a few with good reps around here.

You may want to check with TLG Auto (Marco or Tony) but I can't recall if they do 4cyls; Marco is a 914 fan and great guy, and I'm sure could PPI the car in general for rust and overall condition.

Callas Rennsport in Torrance (South Bay).

If you decide to give them the business make sure you call first as they are always backed up.

On the surface it sounds like fun but if you break down, you will likely be towing the car somewhere and not many mechanics work on 914s.

Find a nice car somewhere; have someone PPI it for you; Fly to see it/buy it; drive it around the town for a couple of days then have it shipped home and fly home.

My buddy bought a VW bus in Chicago and flew there to buy it/drive it home to PA. He got 20 miles out of the windy city before the engine overheated and seized up. He had to rent a car to get home and it took him 4 months to get the car back to PA.

BTW,

TRE Motorsports in Van Nuys work on my car. Dave, the owner, is a great guy and owns a 6 himself. After I got the car and shipped it over from Atlanta they did a compression test and PPI (Post Purchase Inspection smile.gif ) for me.

I am personally put off by the "too much to list" comment. If you are selling a good car an honest seller will tell you the good and the bad. To me it says i want to sell this quick and not say much about the car.

Or lazy seller, tells me that they probably think they have a better car than reality, and expect top dollar. I also agree with some of the others, generic pics look suspect... Doesn't want his car near another shop? Lots of flags here...
