Full Version: L-Jet won't start when warm

Hi

I have a fellow in France who owns a 1.8 L-jet

He bought the car a few weeks ago. It ran well until this problem occured.

Symptoms :

Starts and runs great when cold.

Once it has run (10 seconds or 3 hours) the car won't start until you spray "star pilot" in the air intake.
So it should be an injection issue and not eletrical.

Once the car runs, it runs well

Any idea of what is the issue ?

Check the fuel pressure while the engine is not starting. IIRC, it should be in the 2.5 bar range for L-jet? Verify that the pump does run when the starter is cranking.

Check the CHT resistance when hot and when cold. Hot it should be under 100 ohms, cold should give you a ~2000 ohm reading.

Check that the double relay is powering the injection system and the pump when the engine is failing to start.

Make sure the electrical connections in the fuel injection wiring are clean and tight. Double-check the grounds!

Verify that the resistance of the resistor pack (on the battery tray) is in the right range. (Sorry, I don't remember what that is.) And that it's the same, hot or cold.

Disable the cold-start injector; unplug it electrically. Possibly disconnect the fuel from it if you can, to rule out a leaking injector causing problems.

Verify the motion of the flap in the air flow meter. If it sticks, that's bad. Also check when the engine is not starting.

Check for vacuum leaks. A large one could lean the mixture enough that the engine will not start. So check for things that would leak when the engine is warm, not when it is cold.

Clay is our local L-jet guru. Hopefully he will pop his head in here and give you more knowledgeable advice.
