Right, so I finally got around to replacing my speedo cable. Bought the cable from PP a few months ago. So today, I go out, pull the dash, pull the carpets, make sure that there is nothing obstructing the old cable. Go to the back, jack it up, put in the jackstands, clean off the old cable, tie twine to it, tape it flush and I am ready to rock and roll.

I grab a wrench to pull the old fitting off the tranny and blink.gif !!

The replacement cable has threads on the inside, the old cable has them on the outside. Is there a difference in years? Mine is a 73. Not sure if i missed something here. Going back to PP tomorrow to see if they'll do me a swap.

Car is sitting in the driveway, wheel off, dash off (fitting a replacement speedo with working odo while I am at it). I am bummed.

errr? my replacement cable has 2 female ends. one for the male threads on the back of the speedo and the other for the male threads on the speedo angle drive. i had no probs on a 73. switched out in about 20 minutes.

Yeah, speedo end is fine. Tranny end on cable is female, needs to be male.

that ain't right!

are you sure you didn't remove the angle drive thing with the cable???

the speedo cable should have a "thread inside" end on the tranny which screws onto the angle drive ...

sounds like the cable is right, but your tranny isn't ...

Hi , this is what you should have:

There's the problem!! The angle drive is not at an angle anymore. ohmy.gif

How that would break is beyond me, but it looks like the problem.

Anyone got a spare?

KaptKaos
Ok, so I called PP and they have angle drives in stock. Is it worthwhile for me to get a new one, or should I source a used one?

Opinions?

Thanks!

new = new

used = could have 10k miles on it, could have 200k miles on it smile.gif

it is a part that wears out and fails.....

i guess it depends on the price differential and what your time is worth in case the used one fails in a short time frame...

Go new....
KaptKaos
ok, so i get the angle drive and guess what??? it don't fit. the bolt that connects it to the tranny is too small. Tom at PP is gonna try and find me another to compare. IF that dont work, not sure what to do next.

I'll post pix tomorrow - having a martini now and posting pix can be hazardous in my condition wink.gif

i had the same problem.... my angle drive broke while driving... dropped to the ground....and broke off and broke the cable too.....

so i have a new cable and a new angle drive wink.gif

Speedo? What's a speedo? huh.gif

Update:

Went to PP to swap out the angle drive. All of them are the wrong diameter for the tranny side. sad.gif

They took it back, gave me my money back and are pulling the part from stock cause it seems that this batch is all wrong.

So if anyone has a spare, please let me know.

Thanks,
Joe

try German Parts and Restoration (GPR). Get the number from www.gprparts.com . They should also stock them.
