I have been working on the new and improved turbo conversion and may push to higher boost levels than before, an Intercooler is in the plans as well as a water injection system to keep things nice and clean in the combustion chamber and keep the aluminum pistons from melt down. I need to replace the bushings in my control arms also.

This has been really bugging me and I dont know what to do.
After I get all the mechanical stuff installed and figured out I will commence on a paint job.
The car was originally Signal Orange and has been repainted about 4 times as best as I can tell Black. Just about everything in the car has been painted black with the exception of where rubber seals have been. Every time the black paint scratches away there is beautiful Signal Orange paint. I would love to strip the car down and repaint it Signal Orange but cant bear the thought of the work involved and the time I would have to go without my turbo fix.
Should I just stay with the Black for now and after I blow the thing up then paint it Orange or should I just tear into it and consider myself car less for a few years.

Look at it as if it's your mule... build it, prefect it, then disassemble it, jack stands, and glory days.



With a project like your's, I couldn't see any other way of getting it right.

Get new turbo running

Fix suspension bushings.

Add intercooler

Dyno car to verify horsepower, or do underwear test (the larger the stain on a passenger's underwear, the more horsepower you have).

Enjoy for a while

Paint later (spring is coming).

I did a repaint on my first 914 back in the mid 80's stripped it down to bare metal and sandblasted all the nooks and crannies, It took me all Spring, Summer, and Fall to do the work. I painted it in my garage on a late Fall night then put it to bed for the Winter. The car didn't get put together till late next Summer only to find out the paint was popping off in places because the shop sold me an incompatible sealer under my top coat. I never did get the paint job redone as she rusted away before my eyes over the next fifteen years.
I do not want to repeat this story in my life.
Black it is and off to the pros at the body shop come Spring.
