I haven't removed my rockers since I got my car back in Aug 03. Ok I know, Iknow slap.gif alfred.gif I do run the hose behind there every week or two. So this is what I found when I removed my rockers. Here is my small but nice ppile of dirt & rust ohmy.gif

The driver side had a small collection of dirt & rust but it looks like some PO drilled a drain hole dry.gif check it out. The hole is a perfect circle and every thing else around the area is solid. I guess I will need to open it up to get all the dirt and crap out.

Yep. Anyone that lives near to me know how to weld?? I'm going to order the jack post plate and a few other things tomorrow with GPR 20% off sale biggrin.gif

once you drill out the rivits holding the rockers on, what do you use to reattach the rockers. Do you know if this is any clearence problems with using screws? Any idea what screws to use.

rivets.... cheap enough, readily available, easy.

plastic rivets, if available, are like $25/10

don't think there is anything for a screw to hold on to.

The drain hole at the bottom of the jack post plate was there from the factory. The replacement part should have one also.

Is there any way to check the longs without removing the rockers??

Oh, and yes I am going to use the plastic rivets. If you have never taken off the rockers it is simple to do. There are three screws on bottom underside, then one in each fenderwell , then just drill out the rivet heads. Takes all of 5 min to do.

I'm going to use really shallow pan-head stainless screws to hold the top of my rockers. I think it'll make it easier to pull them off for cleaning.

Why would one use metallic rivets as apposed to plastic rivets?


Are the plastic rivets actually rivets?


Does one use a "standard" rivet gun( the same rivet gun one may use to fasten metallic rivets) to set the plastic rivets?


Would one who "knows" prefer to use the plastic or metallic rivets?


My 72' car seems to have both.


The day I remove them, I would want a crisis counselor "standing by" because I am concerned for what I may find. ohmy.gif

Frankly, that sounds like a horrible idea. You're just wetting whatever dirt is in there and then you create the rust situation.

BTW, you don't have to remove the rocker panel to get under there. Just undo the screws at the bottom and peel the rocker back an inch or two and let the dirt fall out. Everybody should clean out their rockers.

Uh related to the resto jack plates, depending who you get them from not always do they come with the drain (read rust!) holes.
If I were doing that ...and I am, Id weld those shut so NO water gets in behind the plate once welded.
