I like the look of the chrome bumpers, and was wondering if they would fit on a model with the black rubber bumpers? Also, what are the advantages or disadvantages to owning a later model 914 ('75 and '75)?? Also, any tips when looking to buy a 914 (what to look for and what to avoid). Still looking for the right one.

thanks, appreciate any help.

Yup...You need the dogbones that go between the bumper and the front pan....you will also have to grind off the lip that the old bumper hang onto....

Check out the FAQs on 914 buying on this site...

Later 75-76 models can still be subject to smog inspections depending on your state ...CA does have one or two counties that are exempt, some counties have VERY strict standards....then there are some that are less so....

They have more smog gunk on them if they were a CA car.....they are a bit heavier due to the bumpers and smog stuff.

You have to drill the four mounting holes for each of the early-style bumpers, and you have to grind off the lips that the edges of the bumper cover hook onto. (3 for the front bumper, 2 for the rear.) Paint the bare metal to make sure it doesn't rust.

The 75-76 had power-robbing exhausts, and in some states had catalytic converters and/or air pumps and/or exhaust gas recirculation as well. They were heavier, mostly because of the very heavy bumpers. However, they are better able to withstand low-speed front or rear impacts because of the bumpers. The body structure is also slightly heavier with extra reinforcements compared to the very early cars. (About the same as the mid-73 cars and onward.)

is there anywhere to pick up some aftermarket chrome bumpers? Someone told me there was a place in Hayward that had some- if so, does anyone know where?

thanks
Joe Bob
GPR sells them on an exchange basis..dunno if he will sell w/o a core.

Hi Peter,

Parts Heaven is in Hayward....but they are a dismantler and may want some bucks for a clean original set. Hopefully one of the folks on the site will have a set they will part with for a good price laugh.gif

How was the car in SF?

I was looking for a set last year. PH had none.
I found a cheap parts car with a good set for $300.
Also had the gold "P-O-R-S-C-H-E" engine lid lettering and a Momo race wheel and some other schtuff. biggrin.gif

You could have a set of old style painted bumpers chromed. The black painted steel bumpers are everywhere for cheap or free.

mikez brings up a good point. In California the 75 is smog exempt while the 76 is not. This gives you more latitude on what you want to do with the car. He is also correct about Viagra. It is a phosphodiasterase 5 inhibitor which allows the unopposed release of nitric oxide causing vasodilation. This lowers blood pressure. Damn! why do I remember this chit! I have gone to too much school!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
